The site is stepped and tight, hemmed in by retaining walls and neighbouring houses. The rig had to be repositioned to follow each step, and every move meant checking the platform again — on sloping ground, a rig that is not level puts the pile out of plumb immediately.

The ground is full of rock and boulders, so drilling was carried out with a core barrel to cut through the hard layers. It is slower per pile, but it is the only way to reach the design depth without damaging the hole.
