Secant Piling Services
A secant pile wall is a continuous earth retaining structure formed from interlocking bored piles, leaving no gap. It is chosen when the wall must hold back water, or when the soil between piles cannot be relied on to stand alone — conditions common in deep excavation and slope works.
Where the groundwater table is low and the soil cohesive enough, spaced soldier piling is usually more economical. Secant piling is chosen precisely when conditions rule that option out.
How It Works
Primary & secondaryAlternate piles are built first as primaries, setting out the spacing along the wall alignment.
The piles between them are bored afterwards, cutting into the primaries on either side — this is where the gap closes.
All pile heads are tied by a capping beam that makes the row act as a single wall rather than separate piles.
The interval between primary and secondary must be right: too soon and the primary concrete is not yet strong enough; too late and cutting into it becomes difficult.
Case Study: Kota Baru Parahyangan
Bandung — 2025An earth retaining wall running 73.5 metres within the Kota Baru Parahyangan development, Bandung. Ø 500 mm piles use 17 D25 reinforcement with D13-150 spiral ties and fc’ 30 MPa concrete, tied by a 100×75 cm capping beam along the alignment.
The wall sits on the property boundary directly alongside the road reserve, with fill on one side and cut on the other — so the retained height differs between the two faces. Concrete cover for the secant piles is set at 75 mm, thicker than for ordinary piles.
